      Software Engineer Interview

      6 May 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Healthify

      Interview

Process consisted of phone screen, take-home test, technical review of the test with engineering management, and 3 more hours of coding exercises, partly with the same engineering managers. Process was way too long; I would expect the team to be able to measure my technical ability after reviewing the coding exercise with the leads, without needing 2 more lengthy coding tests. The take-home test was huge and asked for way too much of the candidate’s time. Engineering management did not seem to have a clear enough idea on how to evaluate candidates for the role. And the final portion consisted of pairing with an engineer to do a real production ticket, which is inappropriate; a candidate should never do real work for the company. I had a clear dealbreaker which I established with the team in every stage; at first, they gave vague assurances that this wouldn’t be a issue, but only in the last interview did they admit that my dealbreaker will indeed be a dealbreaker, and only after I asked the same managers again. I was rejected at the end (and would have turned down the role) but I would have appreciated being rejected earlier, or if they discussed their expectations honestly & directly in the first manager interview. Not being clear and decisive about what their team actually needs from this role was extremely frustrating and a huge waste of time. Overall I’m not sure if the team was ever seriously considering me for the position or just taking advantage of my experience to get free technical consultation; their questions and tests were more like they were picking my brain and seeking advice rather than evaluating me against pre-established criteria. I hope this is due to lack of management experience rather than being intentionally unprofessional, but it still reflects very poorly on how Healthify treats its candidates.

Hi there candidate, Thank you so much for your feedback. As a small company & team, we relish every opportunity to fine tune our process, so this is very helpful. First, we are sorry you felt we weren't seriously considering you, candidate, because we absolutely were! Second, we're taking a guess that the free work you're referring to may be pointed at our interview where we ask the candidate to implement a progress bar in the application (albeit in an old state). We want to clarify that this is task is consistent across candidates. The interview is meant to expose the candidate to our dev environment; the feature, however, has already been implemented, so no candidate work is ever put into production. Thank you for helping us understand that we need to make that clearer. We certainly wouldn't want a candidate to walk away feeling used, and we're grateful for the help in gauging how explicit we need to be going forward. Again, we are deeply sorry you walked away feeling less than good, and are very happy for the feedback and chance to make sure it doesn't happen again. Best of luck to you, candidate! Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Healthify in Jun 2018

      Interview

      1) Initial phone screen with HR. Got to learn some initial information about Healthify 2) Take home exercise. Got to do a full-stack take home exercise that closely relates to real work the company does 3) Code review interview. Joined a call with two engineers on the team and we performed synchronous code review. 4) 4 hour remote interview. This included: - Architecture/planning exercise with a senior engineer. I had to break down a large task into implementable units - Pairing with a few engineers, coding in real time to augment by take home exercise - Casual conversation with the COO. Learning more about the company

      Question 1

How do you think about taking a large task (an epic) and breaking it down into stories?

      Software Engineer Interview

      19 Sept 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Healthify (New York, NY) in Sept 2017

      Interview

After an initial phone screen, there was a coding challenge that was to be submitted after seven days. After I submitted it, I waited a few days, but I didn't hear back (another issue). So I kindly asked for some feedback. They simply replied that they had decided to go with another candidate. The rejection didn't actually bother me. What bothered me was that they couldn't be bothered to provide any details after I had specifically asked. I think it's rude for any company to expect a candidate to work on something for a minimum of four hours (feels like free work) and not provide any sort of specific reason. Would 5 minutes of their time have been too much to ask? From now on, I won't be taking any more coding tests unless they are paid (yes, this is a thing).

      Question 1

Add code to a website to allow users to filter organizations based on eligibilities with the option of "or" or "and" on those eligibilities. The pages also had to match their responsive UI design.
