      Software Engineer Interview

      10 Feb 2019
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Handshake (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2018

      Interview

The general interview process is what you would expect, the first step is a short phone-call with a recruiter, followed by a 1 hour shared coding session using codeinterview.io, and then an onsite interview. There was approximately one week between each step before scheduling the next step. The onsite was the longest one I've ever done at 7 hours. The most notable part of the process is the independent coding project, which took up half of that time. It was a three-hour long full-stack project done on my own laptop, followed by a 30 minute presentation of my work to two engineers. It started off with an engineer giving me a rundown of the project with a printout of the exact instructions, and then I was on my own working on it in a conference room, with a check-in halfway through. The engineer also gave me their phone number and showed me where their desk was in case I needed any help, but the instructions were clear enough for me that I never needed to ask them for help. The rest of the day was all 30 or 45 minutes sessions: - Lunch - Talk with a product manager - Talk with an engineering manager - Architecture whiteboarding session - Coding whiteboarding session, focused on object-oriented design I had my onsite at the end of December when a lot of people were taking time off vacation, and because of that I had to come back onsite for an hour a couple of weeks later to meet with the VP of Engineering and hiring manager. The recruiter scheduled a phone call with me a couple of days later where I received an offer.

I applied through other source. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Handshake in Apr 2025

      Interview

The interview process was very well-organised and transparent. The recruiter maintained excellent communication throughout and was both professional and responsive. Each person I met was well-prepared, asked thoughtful questions, and had deep knowledge in their respective fields. Overall, the experience was positive and gave me a great impression of the company.

Recruiter call followed by tech screen. Same question others have described. I provided a working solution but was rejected for reasons unknown. No feedback was shared. Not a good experience.

      Interview

Interview Process: 1) OA - easy/med leetcode 2) Technical Phone Interview - Work solo for 1 hour adding requirements of a given take-home assignment for both frontend and backend. Then 1 hour with interviewer to discuss what you have done 3) Hiring Manager Interview - talking about your projects Overall, a simple process. Although, the hiring manager I talked with seemed to be annoyed and was cold. No pleasant introductions, straight to the point.
