      Entry Level Software Developer Interview

      5 Nov 2020

      Washington, DC
      Accepted offer

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at General Motors (GM) (Washington, DC) in Oct 2020

      Interview

I applied online in May of 2020, I received my first HireVue video set (five questions) in June/July. I waited 5 days before completing them (prepared using STAR method answers). After that, I was given immediately a quick three-challenge game session to test my aptitude and responsiveness. Following this, about one month passed before I was given an email for the coding challenge. In my case, there were two questions: Take Binary strings and adding them together; convert numbers into a hexadecimal string. All of this was exactly like Hackerrank type material (highly recommend brushing up). Also, this challenge was in whatever language you preferred (I did Python). Four days passed and I was given an email for a phone screen. I set up my date (Wednesday) and had a one-hour long conversation with my phone interviewer. Typically it is 15-30 minutes, but my interviewer and I just had a business-oriented conversation (went through the five main questions, two-three STAR related), and the rest we just talked about the company. Be sure to ask questions, and talk to the people like they are humans, not intimidators(?). Be personable, open, relaxed, and you will make it to final round. A week later I received an email to confirm date for Skype interviews (two, one-hour sessions). They mainly consisted of 5-STARL (Lessons learned) questions so be sure to prep accordingly! I breezed through the STAR questions in about 15-20 minutes (which I thought had negated my being extended an offer). I did mess up on the "Tell me about a time which you used data to convince a colleague or coworker". Due to the ambiguity of this question, even though I had breezed through the other questions, it took me longer to answer and my interviewer kind of guided me along with a previous answer that I could have possibly used to answer it. Overall, the interview process is very relaxed, and amazing. The people who I talked with were EXTREMELY nice and kind. Made me feel relaxed, at home, even though I dressed up in a suit and tie for the phone screen and Skype calls. I would recommend that you all prepare for the STAR question-answer responses. Be quick, concise, but mainly calm when dealing with the videos/interviewers/etc. The latter are humans, who have been in your position before, just treat them (respectfully of course) but also like a future coworker or friend. Do not be tense, calm down, take a few minutes to collect yourself if you do not know how to answer a STAR question (for the phone screen and Skype call). For the videos, be sure to look at the camera! Also, wear a dress/suit and tie for the videos, think business/business casual. I did my videos at 11:00 PM, as I had been preparing all week using the STAR method for my resume experience/personal experience.

Only did the OA, passed both problems, probably Leetcode Easy to lower medium. Never received another interview. Pretty fun questions, but easy to pass so the resume is the big part.

      Interview

A year ago, it was not technical and questions were easily answered in STAR format. Being able to talk about resume and experience is vital, as well as answering scenario questions.
