      Research Director Interview

      15 Nov 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Fort Myers, FL
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 12 months. I interviewed at Gartner (Fort Myers, FL) in Jul 2016

      Interview

Begins with typical HR screening. Then many (many) virtual interviews with your potential fellow research directors and VPs, and then followed by an interview with the Managing VP (your boss). If you are successful you will be invited to participate in the in person panel interview when the real fun begins. You are given time (with no internet access) to write a DETAILED paper on your designated technology and then you defend your paper (dissertation type defense), your points, and your theories in front of both live and virtual senior Gartner Analysts (no pressure).

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

You will be judged on your ability to speak FLUENTLY about technology, the market, OEMs, and trends at varying levels. You can be talking about digitization one minute and then be waist deep in Software Defined Networking technologies the next. The best way to prepare for the interview is to simply know your stuff. But, let your love of technology and personality shine through. Be your genuine self, and have fun with it. But make no mistake its the Navy SEAL BUD/S Training of Interviews and designed specifically to weed out all but the elite candidates. When you get your offer you will value what you have accomplished but most importantly you will be accepted into the fold of one of the most respected institutions in the industry.

      Interview

The recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn. I scheduled a 30-minute meeting with them. The recruitment gave me an extension description of the job position. I was told that I had excellent research experience, but lacked business acumen. The recruiter was very transparent and communicated to me that for the position I was applying for, this was a red flag. They were looking for someone with experience working with C-level executives.
