      Software Engineer Interview

      23 Jun 2020
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Front (San Francisco, CA) in Mar 2020

      Interview

I had a PHENOMENAL process with Front! The company values care and transparency, and those values were extremely tangible throughout the entire process. I first heard about Front in December when someone from the recruiting team reached out. I wasn't looking at the time but I stayed in touch and reached back out a few months later when I began my search. From there, I connected with the recruiter and we had a terrific conversation about my interests, Front, and the interview process. She was warm and friendly and sounded genuinely excited about my interests and the alignment with Front. The process going forward was a coding assignment, code review over video chat, an onsite, then the offer. I found the coding assignment engaging and interesting. It took around four hours to finish, and the team stressed that it was ok to not get everything perfect, but that they were more interested in seeing clean well-structured code and understanding my thought process. The assignment was based on a feature of Front's product and I enjoyed working on it. After I submitted the assignment, I learned that the team liked my submission and didn't feel the need to do the video code review, so I went straight to the onsite. This was around when covid 19 started so the entire onsite was over Zoom, but I don't think that detracted from the experience. I had two technical 1-on-1 sessions: the first focused more on technical breadth and walked through a series of topics related to web applications, and the second focused more on technical depth where we dived deep into my background and a project that I worked on. Lastly, I had a session with the hiring manager. I really enjoyed all the sessions. I found the interviewers and questions engaging, and noted that the folks that work at Front really embody their values. A few hours later, I received a call that the team wanted to move forward with an offer! I appreciated the quick turnaround and feedback. From here, Front's dedication to transparency blew me away. I let the recruiter know that I had a bunch more questions about the team and the company, and she scheduled some calls with some senior engineers, the head of engineering, and someone on finance to help get my questions answered. After all this, signing the offer was easy :)

      Interview

1st Recruiter call 2nd Hiring manager 3rd Coding round which recruiter mentioned will be algorithms and leetcode however turns out it is real world problem[more like simulation of their messaging system] based questions also a miscommunication in preferred language I mentioned vs what interviewer was prepared for. Company needs to find standards on this coding round which apparently is very newly introduced round in their interview process

      Interview

RUN!!!! Very high egos (their core values include low ego and all I saw was a high ego and no respect)! Over 8 rounds of interviews and simple/basic questions that seemed incredibly biased. One interviewer was flat-out rude to me and clearly did not want me to succeed at any cost. I won't even endorse their product at this point since their culture book is a joke based on my experience.

      Interview

Contacted by recruiter to set up initial call. Recruiter cancelled at last minute and asked to postpone without giving option for when rescheduling. Told me I would be contacted early next week with more details. Waited until the next Thursday to contact the recruiter again so that I could be told the position was cancelled. Absolute waste of time. Recruiter has no respect for applicant time.
