Interview
I was called in for an interview and when I showed up at the store the customer service worker did not even know they were hiring and made me stand there and wait.
I went back for the interview and the store manager made me very uncomfortable.
He gave me a look up and down and then asked me to have a seat.
Turns out he was just an incredibly awkward person in general but he came across as very unprofessional.
He saw on my application that I had been fired from a job a year prior but said that he didn't really care.
He asked me absolutely no questions about work ethic, experience, etc.
He asked me questions about my family and turns out he knew my uncle and went to school with him. (It is a small town)
He then asked me about my ethnicity. He straight up asked me if I was Asian. (I get this all the time even though I am European and Cherokee, but in a job interview I was taken aback)
He marveled at how "Asian I looked." And asked me several times if I was sure I wasn't Asian.
I assured him I am not. He asked me no other questions he just looked at me and said he thought I would do well at the job.
He hired me on the spot; no background check, no IQ test, no drug screening, nothing.
I told him I would think about it ( I had another job interview the next day)
I accepted this position and when he told the other manager about me he told her my English was very good for being oriental.
I was so offended (not because "looking Asian" is a bad thing but because I felt like I was being hired for my looks and not my ability or intelligence)
I applied in-person. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Food Lion (Midlothian, VA) in Apr 2026
Interview
Managers were very organized and down to earth. Very easy to talk to, friendly, and kind. Offered to give plenty of help on the job whenever I would start. We talked casually, so it took a lot of the pressure off of the prospect of interviewing, especially because I don't have a lot of interview experience.
Interview at Food Lion felt friendly, fast paced, professional; I highlighted reliability, teamwork, customer service, flexibility, availability, eagerness, learning, and retail experience during questions about shifts schedules growth goals culture

Interview
Pleasant interview process with Store Manager. Asked relevant questions to the position, as well as work history questions. The interview wasn't long and drawn out. Good experience overall for a person looking for a starter job.
