Senior Detection and Response Engineer Interview

      11 Apr 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Expel in Apr 2026

      Interview

Recruiter Screen → Hiring Manager → 3 Final Rounds. Two final rounds with team members, last final round with Director + Hiring Manager. Most of my experience interacting with everyone here was positive. All of the engineers on the team were great to talk to and genuinely enjoyable to meet. Three out of five interviews had really good vibes overall. The hiring manager was relatively new to the role at the time of interviews, which may have contributed to the conversation feeling less structured. At times it felt like my resume hadn't been fully reviewed prior to the interview, as there were moments where the hiring manager appeared to be reading it during our conversation to find talking points. That said, the hiring manager was pleasant throughout and the conversation was still worthwhile. Given that several people on the team including the hiring manager and director were fairly new to Expel, the description of the role's day-to-day responsibilities varied somewhat between conversations. This made it a little difficult to get a fully consistent picture of the position across all rounds, though each individual interview was still valuable. The director and hiring manager final round had a more formal tone than previous conversations. Worth being prepared for a more structured and serious interview style here compared to the team interviews. The rejection letter was detailed and genuinely appreciated. It's rare to receive that level of feedback and it was constructive overall. However, some of the feedback cited gaps in experience that wasn't very accurate compared to my actual background and day to day work. It's more likely that my experience didn't come through clearly enough during the interviews, which is something I'll take ownership of going forward. Come prepared with very specific and concrete examples of past work, particularly around cross-team collaboration, driving initiatives independently, and complex technical problem solving.
