      Technical Writer Interview

      5 Feb 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Vienna, VA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Excentium (Vienna, VA) in Jan 2020

      Interview

I applied for the role online and interviewed with the company about a week later. A week after that I had a WebEx panel interview, which was a surprise to me because I was under the impression I would be interviewing with only one person. After that I had another in-person panel interview. The interviews were pretty basic. They asked me about my experience a bunch of times and wanted me to go over my strengths and weaknesses. They also asked me to identify my spirit animal? The major downside to this company is their approach. The role was advertised as remote, and I spoke at length with the company about it being a remote role, however I wasn’t informed that it was actually NOT a remote job until the day I came to do onboarding. As a matter of fact, because I could not come onsite the day they wanted me to, my start date was pushed back three days. Even though I had made it clear to the company that I could only work remote, on the day of my onboarding, the company had the nerve to be adamant that I need to come onsite and that the role was “impossible” to work remote. Therefore, the day I met the company for onboarding was a disaster. The company was condescending and saying that my reaction was “familiar” and that it was basically their way or the highway. After I left the meeting, I called my regular point of contact, where they basically disintermediated theirself self from the entire situation and blamed it on “miscommunication” . They said they had been trying to convince the company to “work around” my schedule and that all the other employees actually do work remote. But that is extremely contradictory because the company told me that the role is not remote at all, so which is it? Basically the company baited and switched me. I spent $80ish dollars in uber transportation and my personal time was wasted. I was treated like a number, rather than a qualified candidate. I was mislead and no one took accountability for the depravity of their actions. I ended up walking out of the onboarding session. Didn’t see a reason to stay.
