      Frontend Engineer Interview

      4 Mar 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Ethyca (New York, NY) in Jan 2020

      Interview

First there was a scheduled phone screen with the CEO (which was then rescheduled at the last possible moment, with little notice). The screen went well and I was asked to reach out to them if I was interested in order to continue the process (weirdly enough). After reaching out with continued interest, I received no updates for FIVE-SIX WEEKS and then suddenly received an email from the head of talent requesting another phone screen. This screen composed almost entirely of the newly hired head of talent asking about what I talked about with the CEO in the other screen and asked if he seemed interested in my candidacy (because apparently they never followed up with anyone and forgot how their calls went..). He stated that the company was growing and they're trying to change their hiring process. The conversation stretched on longer than the allotted time (I stated that I had plans directly after the call but he was adamant on staying on the line), so I had to actively try to end the conversation. Before the screen was over he stated that, if I were still interested, he could send over a test/take-home in the next few days for me to look over. I stated yes, and TWO WEEKS later he sends over a 90minute hackerrank timed test (the description for the test stated that it was too long to finish in the 90min so it would be best to choose questions strategically and get the most done possible in 90min). As a mid-level engineer, a timed hackerrank exam (as well as the extremely slow response rate) is definitely an insult, so I simply didn't respond.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Ethyca in Feb 2020

      Interview

The interview process was great! The recruiter got in touch with me quickly, I was able to schedule my interview with him but just clicking a link to his calendar. The call was very informational and covered a lot about the company's mission, what it's like working there, the technical challenges, and culture. At the end of the call, the recruiter said he wanted to move forward with my candidacy, so he sent me a HackerRank test maybe 3-4 hours after our call. I completed the test and received feedback on whether or not I was moving forward with a 1-2 days of my submitting my solutions. Overall it was a good experience, well organized, and things move quickly.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Ethyca (New York, NY) in Feb 2020

      Interview

I was reached out to by their recruiter, I was able to quickly set up a call using a link to his calendar, the call was very informational and he asked some good questions about my background, previous project work, challenging projects i've worked on, etc. We also talked about the data privacy space, how the company is making an impact by providing an automated platform for data compliance. The recruiter told me at the end of our call that he wanted to move forward with my candidacy, he then sent me a link later that day to a Hacker Rank test that took 90 minutes. He provided instructions, which were simple, and the test itself was a bit tricky but I felt I got through it. After submitting my solutions, I received an email from the recruiter about 2 days later that they wanted to move forward, I accepted and had another interview, this time on-site, which went well and was very informative. Overall, It was a great experience, moved quickly, everyone was very smart and knew what they were doing.
