First is the Hiring manager interview, design challenge that is entirely outdated, inequitable, and requires a 30 minute presentation, panel interview with engineering, pm, and implementation, and finally ceo/founder interview. I should’ve known better after reading the other review. Any company still tasking candidates with a design challenge (especially for a senior level position) is a major red flag and signals a highly immature understanding of design. What a waste of time.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Esper in Feb 2025
Interview
I personally didn't get very far, but this is what I learned from the company. I wanted to share so all the designers should be aware. I also want to say that the chat with the vp/head of product was overall positive. However, there are some concerns if you are considering this role.
1. Solo product designer will have to support 3-4 product managers while owning the design system. This seems like a lot of work for the compensation they were offering.
2. They are currently relying on an agency for design, which may suggest that design isn’t a priority and that the company isn’t investing in building an internal design culture.
3. If you advance in the process, there is a take-home design challenge. However, given the absence of an in-house designer, it raises concerns about their ability to accurately assess design quality and craft.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Esper in Dec 2023
Interview
The interview process was incredibly professional, timely, and communicative. There were 3 interview rounds; 1 with the hiring manager and 2 separate team interviews. The questions were thoughtful and allowed me to showcase my experience to present as a strong candidate, but also to learn about the role and what would be expected of someone joining the team. I felt I had a full picture and understanding of the job I would potentially be accepting, and I can't say enough good things about how the Esper team conducted the interview process!
