      Backend Engineer Interview

      10 Mar 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Madrid
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Erudit (Madrid) in Jan 2023

      Interview

General Overview: Overall, the technical people were cool, and the project was technically appealing. However, there were hints of a "crunch" startup mentality, were I was told that some technical employees looked like 'they were almost always warking', making work-life balance a challenge. Interview Process: The interview process consisted of three meetings. The first meeting was with HR, where typical questions were asked, such as why I would consider a change and how much I expected to earn. The second meeting was a pleasant 30-minute conversation with the CTO about their business needs and my past experience. The third meeting was with the CTO and the Tech Lead, where I was informed about a technical task that I was not told about in advance. Technical Task: The technical task involved creating a CRUD API with DB access for a simple model, dockerizing everything, writing tests with mocks, writing GitHub actions for CI/CD, and putting everything on a GitHub repo. The task was time-consuming, and I had to complete it while sharing my screen and with the Tech Lead changing the scope of the task several times. Despite the challenges, we discussed various topics, and the Tech Lead determined I was capable enough for the job. I do not see the change of scope a bad thing, it was an attempt from the Tech Lead to 'fix' an otherwise flawed interview task. Offer: Two days later, I received an offer that was fair enough, but I had to decline it since my current company matched the offer. A few days later, they contacted me again with a counteroffer that included more money. However, I also received an email from HR giving me a farewell, suggesting a miscommunication and different intentions within the company. I was told to wait since they had to talk it further and I never got messaged again. Benefits are on par with the market, nothing you wouldn't find on any other international tech company, my current company had more benefits. Overall, the interview process was ok. The technical people and project were appealing. However, the hints of a "tech bro" startup mentality and work-life balance concerns may not be suitable for everyone.
