      Sales Manager, Event Services Interview

      6 Nov 2009
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Encore Global (Los Angeles, CA) in Nov 2009

      Interview

I was contacted by the company's corporate recruiter who found my response on Monster.com. She was very pleasant and told me that she was not the person who normally conducts the initial phone interview. She described the position without going into much detail. Her questions focused on my knowledge of the meeting planner market. Further she stated that this was a new position for the company and that the salary was in the $55-65K range and then there is a 2.5% commission structure. Satisfied, she was reviewing the results with the Regional DOS and Ops and would get back to me if there was interest. I went to PSAV's website and Monster.com to learn more about the company and position. In both cases the position was listed at $38-42k with commissions. I did not address this with the recruiter. She called me back the following day and we scheduled an appointment for a personal interview with the DOS & Ops and the Area Director. When the day came I was on-site approximately 30 mins early (traffic was not as bad as I had anticipated.) I sat in my car in the parking lot and wrote additional questions down to be asked during the interview. At 15 mins prior to my appointment I went into the office - which was adequate, not fancy. The DOS/Ops came out immediately and apologized for running late (they weren't.) He said that they were in the midst of another interview where the candidate got tied up in traffic and therefore came in late. No problem. He returned a few moments later and walked me to his office. The other candidate was there -- it was a bit awkward. The Area Director was sitting at a side desk which was a considerable way from where the 'interviewee chair' was. The DOS/Ops left to give the other candidate a brief tour of the facilities while I began the interview with the Area Director. It was a relaxed non-structured environment. The Area Director did comment early that they had the highest quality of candidates that he had seen. The DOS/Ops returned and the interview continued with both asking questions -- but, mainly discussing the vision that they had for the position. The Area Director seemed a bit surprised when I spoke about potential market segments - meeting planner related. He also seemed surprised that I would know their competitors -- (I've been in the business 20 years - I should know their competitors.) Apparently there would be sales calls to hotels as well. Further, it appeared that the position was evolving and not totally in stone as they had just hired an Sr VP of Sales from Freeman who was restructuring the team. I came well prepared with a list of detailed questions - to include questions regarding training. They were a bit vague in a few of their responses. They relayed that they wanted to hire someone immediately. At its conclusion the DOS/Ops walked me through their extremely well organized warehouse. We also walked through the office space. There were two vacant and I was told that they had had to lay some people off. This was a bit unsettling as I was just laid off myself and know that the economy has certainly affected our industry. I was told that I would hear from them on Friday - 2 days later. The interview lasted 1.5 hours and as I stated earlier it was relaxed. I immediately followed up with a handwritten thank-you note. Friday came and went -- as did Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday I called the corporate recruiter to find out the status of the position. It is now Thursday evening and I have not gotten a call back.
