      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      9 Sept 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chicago, IL
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Early Warning Services (Chicago, IL) in Aug 2025

      Interview

My interview process for the Senior Software Engineer role at Early Warning Services included multiple rounds, ranging from coding and system design to behavioral discussions and offer negotiation. Overall, the process felt easy. Many of the engineers I interviewed with didn’t seem very skilled or experienced, especially during technical deep dives. From what I learned, the company isn’t profit-driven — it’s funded by seven banks and operates Zelle. It doesn’t compete like a typical tech company, which may explain the lower engineering bar. Their salary range seems lower than the market. After receiving the offer, it made sense why the engineering talent seemed weaker. The recruiter tried to position the offer as competitive and the benefits as strong, but based on my industry experience, it was the second-lowest salary I’ve been offered, and the health insurance was the least attractive I’ve seen. That said, my recruiter was excellent — she clearly explained each step, provided all necessary information, and communicated very well throughout the process.

      Interview questions [4]

      Question 1

Technical and Coding: Basic object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts and a simple LeetCode-style question.
      Answer question

      Question 2

Technical and System Design: System design similar to Ticketmaster, but with a smaller (a few) scale in terms of daily active users.
      Answer question

      Question 3

Hiring manager interview (with 2 different team): Had a good conversation with a manager who asked clear, straightforward questions. One of the questions I recall: “If you’re designing a system, what technologies would you use?”

      Question 4

In person interview: This round was focused on behavioral questions.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Early Warning Services

      Interview

Two rounds of interviews. First round was 30 minute call with hiring manager, I gave overview of my background and answered a few behavioral questions. The design question was very light. Second round was an onsite, 1 hour of technical and 30 minute with another manager for potential match. The technical interview included behavioral questions and one coding question / logical and maintainable (write a function that will fit a box in your locker).

      Question 1

Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a co worker.

      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

      Interview

The process was lengthy and lacked transparency. Timelines shifted repeatedly, communication and resume population was poor, and the team proved highly dishonest. Overall, it was a frustrating and very disappointing interview experience.

      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

      Interview

Vibe is way off. Interviewer was a really condescending and rude person who would use his phone while you talk and sigh and roll his eyes if you gave an answer he didn't like. Interview ended early. When he asked if I had any questions, he would only answer with one word answers and it was obvious he wanted to move on. Terrible attitude. Other interviewers are of similar personality. Also the "coding interview screening" has no coding. It's Java trivia with gotchas.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Java trivia like what can you override a static method or how to execute code before the main method.
