      Product Manager Interview

      14 Feb 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at DoorDash in Feb 2024

      Interview

The initial step was good. The recruiter reached out on LinkedIn and I was able to speak with her the next day. She gave a great overview of the opportunity and got me excited about it. She immediately cleared me for the hiring manager interview. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get something on the calendar for 2 weeks out... but it is what it is. The hiring manager interview was the weirdest, most off-putting experience I've ever had. The recruiter told me this interview was more casual and would only consist of digging deeper into my experience and asking some product-sense questions. That was wrong. It started off weird.. usually interviewers set up the interview by introducing themselves and going over what to expect over the next 45 minutes. Instead, he asked me to introduce myself. I gave a pretty concise but comprehensive overview of my experience. There was no reaction from him at all. He spent maybe a minute talking about himself. Then he said "Let's jump into the case". That's when it really went downhill. He asked me ONE question: "You know Turo, right?" I said "sure.. haven't used it, but I've heard of it". Then he said "You're the PM for Turo and you want to fix the most common complaints. How would you proceed?" I tried asking for more detail to see if he would give me any user feedback, metrics, ANYTHING to go off of and he kept telling me to make assumptions - make everything up. I was making up complaints that I thought users may have and making up how often they occur and what the bottom line impact was, etc. It was all based on guesses. No hard facts or data to go off of, which is normally provided in a case study. I would pause, ask for feedback in order to make sure I was on the right track, and never got anything. Then randomly, he would cut me off and ask me to go over my thought process (as if he wasn't listening). Just weird. When it came to Q&A, you could tell he wanted to get off the call. Even if I moved forward in the process, I wouldn't want to proceed.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at DoorDash (San Francisco, CA) in Jun 2026

      Interview

a recruiter chat then a phone screen with a PM that was like mix of product sense and how you rank features and stuff. tthe virtual onsite was four rounds: analytics, product sense, prioritization, and values. the prioritization interview is easily the toughest part of the loop. they don't want generic roadmaps; you have to balance limited resources across their three-sided market (dashers, restaurants, customers) and make really hard trade-offs on who wins and who loses in a given scenario. product sense was super grounded. they aren't looking for you to pitch shiny new app features. we mostly just talked through how to fix things when a live order goes sideways, or what your move is when a neighborhood suddenly runs out of drivers. analytics round was heavy on metric trade-offs, and the values chat was basically checking how you deal when things go wrong with process or other stakeholders, etc. for prep, I’d sayt ditch the standard pm frameworks and actually study gig economy mechanics (there are a lot of gud resources available online). i grabbed a mock interview on prepfully with a doordash pm beforehand and it really helped me get a grip on the marketplace balancing act. you have to be ready to defend your logic when they push back.
