I sent my resume to the recruiter and was emailed within the day. The recruiter first requested samples of my writing work, which she specified were any document that was conceptual and procedural in nature, in addition to other samples, such as white papers, sales collaterals, and quick reference sheets.

The hiring manager (through the recruiter) asked for samples of my actual past work (they were very interested in my work for my previous company in telecommunications R&D). The hiring manager wanted to get copies of manuals I wrote for that company.
