I was approached about Degree53 through multiple recruitment agencies. I was aiming for the mid-level .NET developer position they were offering.
The interview process starts off with a phone interview with the head of development which is more for them to get an initial idea of what kind of person you are and whether you're suitable for the role. Pretty standard stuff.
Successfully passing the phone screening stage, you are given a technical test to complete. Thankfully it is project-based and designed to show off your development competencies as you are given quite a bit of creative control in how you want to complete it (though that may be more to your detriment in the end). Despite what a recruiter may tell you, there's no time limit on this test and you should only submit it when you're pleased. I spent about 3-4 days on it.
Moving onto the final interview stage, you are invited to their Manchester office for a two to one interview with the head of development and another individual (I got a senior developer). I wasn't waiting too long from arriving for the interview to begin, they were a couple of minutes late due to being in a meeting but this is the sort of thing you come to expect.
The interview itself starts off with you introducing yourself to the other person as they haven't really been briefed on who exactly you are. This is one of my two criticisms for their interview process, I think both attendees should be fully aware of who they are interviewing. After that, you will be told a bit about the company itself before moving onto the technical side of the interview.
I felt that the technical questions being asked were pretty standard, there are a lot of the typical 'gotcha' questions to quiz interviewees on whether or not they actually know what they are talking about. That being said, for the role being a mid-level position, some of the .NET knowledge they required for the role was a bit too intense. I felt some of those questions would be more appropriate for a senior role. I consider myself a pretty good .NET developer with a broad knowledge of how .NET works under the hood and even I got caught out on a few things, this is probably what lost me the chance of an offer.
That being said, I had a very positive experience with Degree53 and their interview process. They are definitely worth a try if you are looking to further your career, moving out of your first job out of university.
