      Editor Interview

      8 Aug 2019

      Declined offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at CustomGuide

      Interview

A very strange interview process from start to finish. They hardly had any questions in the phone interview for me beyond a few normal ones like "Why do you want this position?" and "What is one of your strengths?" I took half a day off of work for the second interview (in-person) and was told when I arrived that they had no questions for me and the whole time was mine to ask questions. While the two interviewers were kind, I felt like my time had been wasted. So I asked them a few questions: When I asked about what training/on-boarding looked like, I was told there wouldn't be any. You just "jump right into the role," I was told. (I was fresh out of college at this time. Not much relevant experience. No training seemed strange to me.) When I said who my supervisor would be, I was told I wouldn't have a direct supervisor. When I asked how the position was available (from a back-fill or a new position) I was told that they had laid off all of the editors a couple years prior and that they finally realized their quality fell (!!) and that they needed editors back. The honesty was nice, but that was terrifying for job security. When I asked what style guide they use when editing (AP or Chicago style), the interviewer didn't understand my question. He said they follow the casual writing style of the "For Dummies" manuals because they also like to make technical manuals that laypeople can understand.

      Question 1

Name your top strengths and weaknesses. The interviewer apologized after asking this, saying it was a really hard question, but that's a pretty standard one and that was the hardest they had.
