I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Chicago Agent (Chicago, IL) in Aug 2011
Interview
An e-mail inquiry was followed by a phone interview and, finally, an in-person interview; both interviews were detailed and substantive, and contained great overviews of what the position entailed, what the purpose of the magazine was, and finally, what was expected of me as an editorial intern. There was also a brief editing test, where I had to format a press release in AP, journalistic style.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
What skills I would most like to develop as an editorial intern.
The editor emailed me a writing test (I had to rewrite a press release and write up a calendar event) and invited me into the office for an in-person interview. When I came in, she gave me an editing test, too. Also gave me copies of their magazine to take home.
