      Phd Chemist Interview

      20 Dec 2010
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Houston, TX
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Celanese (Houston, TX) in Oct 2010

      Interview

I first had a phone interview just asking me about my research background. It was made pretty clear that they wanted to invite me down for a site visit. A lot of waiting involved to set up that visit however, not unexpectedly. The facility was nice, smaller than I expected and the people were very kind as well. The dress code was laid back (e.g. jeans, t-shirts). A presentation was given first thing following a short (1 on 1) interview. After the presentation, I received 3 sets of interviews (2 on 1) and a lab tour. The interviews seemed to probe character more than techincal skills. Although I thought I did okay, I think it could have gone better. By my last interview my impression was that they didn't want me. It ended so abruptly I it was noticeably awkward. They closed by saying they would get back to me within a week. Two months later, after calling and e-mailing my interviewers, I finally received notification from an HR rep, whom I decided to contact instead, that I was not selected for the position. Again my impression is that they really stress finding the appropriate fit as opposed to the most qualified person and this coincides with what I have heard from the company in the past. Not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion.
