Associate Product Manager - Product Development Interview

      27 Sept 2022
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Capital One in Sept 2022

      Interview

First round- Product mini case interview. They will start out by asking “Tell me about yourself and Why Product”. After that they will tell you which of the Capital One products you’re gonna be talking about. For me it was Capital One Shopping. They asked what value does C1 Shopping provide? How would you increase the value and create a strategy for C1 Shopping? I talked about user acquisition. Another question was how would I increase conversion rate from emails based on email targeting and past browsing history. What tech components will we need to make this feature possible? Another question is the affiliate marketing link is broken and C1 Shopping thus can’t make money. What would you do in this situation? There is an A/B testing question asking you to compare one design to another. Just voice your thoughts and make sure you mention key words such as user experience, A/B testing etc. Last question they asked was one I found on glassdoor so I was already prepared for it! “You're working on a project and need a technical solution provided by a different team at Capital One, you talk to their product manager but they have a high priority tasks already and don’t believe they will be able to help you for the next 6 months, even though you need their help right now. You set up a meeting with their team’s senior leadership to propose a solution and come to some type of compromise. What would you do before the meeting, during the meeting, and after the meeting? After the first round I got my 3 hour powerday where they sent more information about what to expect for Business Analyst case, product design and product skills. Business Analyst case you need to know how to do profit calculations, weighted averages and breakeven! This is really a must!! My recruiter even told me beforehand that a lot of people pass the product rounds but Capital One is looking for people who can do well on the business analyst case. Business Analyst case- fake scenario about a restaurant chain. Asked how to calculate profits of vegan burger and compared that to regular burger. Also asked basic questions like would you recommend we implement this vegan burger as well we product differentiation and competitors. I did well on profit and weighted averages, but tripped up on the breakeven since it was different than what I expected. I asked him 4 times to restate and explain, which is what I think saved my interview. He ended up giving me the equation and I was able to solve it after that. Product design- another fake scenario about a grocery store chain. Basic product interview and not super hard. One different thing is they asked me in the end how I would do an elevator pitch for my product in 30 seconds. Product Skills- my favorite interview!! My interviewer was super nice and friendly. Know your project super well beforehand and this is a piece of cake. Know your users, painpoints, technology used, revenue and costs, key metrics, tradeoffs and you’re golden! They got back to me two days after my interview via phone call to let me know I got an offer! Very great recruiting process! I also think it’s best to apply early like in July when the application opens as it probably helped me in getting the role. Also attend those business prep sessions they send out as they really help! Good luck, I would’ve loved this review when I was still interviewing and this is really everything you need to know!
