      Senior Visual Designer Interview

      5 Jan 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Canonical in Jan 2024

      Interview

Not worth going through their ridiculous interview process. Definitely a waste of time. They ask you to write an essay about what student you were in high school and what marks you got in university. After that they put you on GIA test. Fortunately, I was rejected at this point and didn’t waste another month of my life. I applied for a designer position, not a NASA engineer.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Outline your thoughts on the mission of Canonical. What is it about the company's purpose and goals which is most appealing to you? What is risky or unappealing?
      Answer question

      Question 2

In high school and university, what did you achieve that was exceptional?

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Canonical (Tallinn) in Aug 2022

      Interview

unnecessary long interview with huge homework and personality test. Past both stages successfully, but in the end got a letter, that they will not progress my application further. The position is still vacant after 3 month. Looks like they are not looking for a candidate but just giving HR some work to do. Don't waste time.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Design experience What makes for an excellent visual design standard or guideline in a large organisation? What are the best ways to achieve consistency across products and websites? What web sites do you really love for their visual design, and why? How do you find the balance between innovation and consistency in a multi-product design team? Tell me about a time when you found a simple solution to a complex problem. Describe the ways in which you, as a visual designer, collaborate with UX and engineering colleagues. Education This is a role that requires excellence in visual design. We ask candidates to give us a sense of their academic credentials and strengths because we think that great visual design for sophisticated, technical products requires a deep understanding of tech and the ability to reason about complex moving parts. How did you fare in high school mathematics, physical sciences and computing? Which were your strengths and which most enjoyable? How did you rank, competitively, in these subjects? What sort of high school student were you? Outside of required work, what were your interests and hobbies? What would your high school peers remember you for, if we asked them? In languages and the arts at high school, what were your strongest subjects and how did you rank in those among your school peers? What did you achieve at university that you consider exceptional? Context Outline your thoughts on the mission of Canonical. What is it about the company's purpose and goals which is most appealing to you? What is risky or unappealing? Why do you most want to work for Canonical? Which Canonical products and services would you most like to work on?

      Interview

Very long and tedious. Interview process had nothing to do with design. Never spoke in person to anyone. I went through a written interview and standardized psychometric assessment and was rejected afterwards.
