I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Caltrans (Riverside, CA) in Jan 2015
Interview
Applied by postal mail, 30 days followed with an e-mail and phonecall to schedule interview. Had to present a 5 min presentation on the mission, values, goals and how I'd applied them every day at work. I had to wait over 30 minutes while other candidates were interviewed. Was the youngest there, I already knew I didn't have the job. No questions asked at all besides What I would do if two people were arguing and How I would handle an employee who says they aren't getting paid.

Question 1
What would you do if people were arguing in the workplace?
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Caltrans (Sacramento, CA) in Jan 2024
Interview
This was the most disappointing unproffessional interview I have ever had. My sound was at high volume for a virtual interview, and I could barely hear what interview questions they asked me. It was a panel of three and one did not say hello. During that same exchange, the same individual stared at me the entire time instead of writing down any response I could offer. This was if I had heard and caught the question. They also sent me a writing assignment the day before. You need to complete it and email it back to four different employees. One of the interviewers stated I hadn't turned it in. She might have seen it in her email if she hadn't rolled out of bed at 4:20pm for the 4:30pm interview.
Upon asking what public records could be sought by Caltrans, the person's response was, "all kinds of different records". Okay that helped me better understand which department. First impressions of these individuals were very negative! At least in the office, I would not be willing to work for this department.
7-8 questions related to experience and qualifications and then an Excel exercise. It's an online interview. Questions are not very hard, pretty reasonable, and straightforward questions related to the position.

Interview
Standardized and professional. Panel of 3 interviewers who asked what's in the binder. Questions were fair and reasonable. Took an excel test afterwards that was pretty easy (wages paid using overtime rules). No complaints.
