I was sent an email from one of their local recruiters asking me to apply for the position of Knowledge Management Sr Manager. I reviewed the position and decided it looked alright, so I emailed the recruiter back with my resume. He replied and asked me to fill out an 8 page application, which I completed and returned to him.
He replied promptly with a phone call, and we discussed my background and if I would be a good fit for the position. Being a government consultant for a number of years, I was familiar with CSC, and even had a few friends who worked in the building near the recruiter. He decided I would be a good fit, and scheduled an interview for the following week. One hour later, he called back and asked if I could interview that Wednesday (it was a Monday) because they were eager to speak with me.
On Wednesday, I met with the recruiter, and he introduced to me to two CSC employees who would be conducting my interview. They asked standard questions about my background, but when it came time to ask specific questions about my fit for the position, they kept having to refer to a print out from the CSC career website. They soon admitted that they really didn't know a lot about the position, and that the people who should have been interviewing me "couldn't make it". Knowing as much, or more, about the position that I was interviewing for than the people across the table, I made a tailored pitch about why and how my skills would be suited to the position requirements.
They both seemed satisfied with my interview, although they reiterated that they would need to have me back to do another interview with the "real stakeholder", since they were just fill-ins. They assured me that they would call me back as soon as the original interviewers were available so that I could do an "official" interview for the position.
Although I thought it went well, it did bother me that I knew more about the job than the interviewers. The fact that the original interviewer couldn't make it, but that they still interviewed me showed a disrespect for my time. Either way, I went home feeling good and spent some time learning more about CSC and the particular program that I would be re-interviewing for with the appropriate parties. I wrote a nice thank you email to the two interviewers and even added one to my LinkedIn network.
A week passed, and I heard nothing back. Another week passed and nothing. I decided to follow-up with the original recruiter to see if they needed any more information or if the person who was supposed to interview me in the first place was available. I got a response from the recruiter the next day that said, "This position has been filled. Thanks for your interest in CSC and please keep reviewing the CSC career site for more opportunities."
What? Either there was an extreme lack of organization or they already had someone in mind for the position and just had to fill an interview quota. Either way, it did not leave a good taste in my mouth about CSC and other giant contract mills who have no consideration for the individual.
