After weeks of phone interviews, with long gaps in between contacts, the company sent me to a final round of interviews at headquarters. I enjoyed multiple in-person interviews and very positive conversations, idea-sharing, and meeting several people who would be my co-workers. The enthusiasm and positive plans for the department gave a good feel. I was told to expect a good phone call in the next day or two. Three weeks later, after I sent multiple unanswered emails, made phone calls to all my contacts and left many unreturned messages, I finally caught an HR manager who let me know they filled the position with an internal candidate. It is understandable to go with an internal candidate. The shoddy notification method is, at best, disappointing and not up to a professional level. Positive interview experience, negative follow-up experience.
