      Data Scientist Interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at C3 AI in May 2017

      Interview

I applied online, and I received an email 1 week later from them asking me to complete a Hackerank test. It was an extremely busy week for me, and they said that the test can be completed in 2 weeks, so I waited for another week before I completed the test. The test itself was not very difficult, but the coding interface was frustrating that it was difficult to debug. The thing that upsets me most is that literally 1 min after I submitted the Hackerank test, I received an email from them saying that they 'reviewed my application and decided not to proceed with my candidacy'(likely auto-generated). I think this is unprofessional. If they auto-grade the test, they could have said so up front because I expected to have someone personally look at my answers. Maybe they should put some effort to improve their interview experience.

Thank you for your interest in a career at C3 IoT. At C3 IoT we follow a rigorous and thorough process to hire our data scientists and engineers. Owing to the large number of resumes we receive, we first use an automated test process that is mediated by HackerRank.com, to screen candidates applying to our data scientist and engineering roles. The HackerRank test for data scientists is designed to be challenging, and tests candidates on both their understanding of machine learning and AI concepts, as well as the practical application of those concepts in code. The minimum score required to pass the test is 70%. Unfortunately, if candidates do not achieve the minimum score, we are unable to pass them on to the next round. Candidates who do not pass are immediately notified. While we ask that candidates complete the test within 2 weeks, we do understand that sometimes candidates are busy. If candidates reach out to us to explain their situation, we are flexible with test deadlines. Our goal is to ensure that candidates have the best possible opportunity to represent themselves. Candidates who pass the automated test process are then invited to a phone screen, followed by onsite interviews with domain experts specific to their field. We invest significant time with candidates in on-site interviews– including detailed technical reviews, coding exercises, theory reviews, and discussions about professional experience. Our mission is to hire exceptionally talented data scientists and engineers who are excited to join us in solving some of the most challenging problems in computing, AI, and information theory. We seek to ensure that C3 IoT remains the premier place to work for software engineers, machine learning, and AI experts who are seeking to make significant professional contributions to highly challenging problems.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at C3 AI (London, England) in Oct 2025

      Interview

I applied directly after seeing a job advert on LinkedIn. There are MCQ and coding assessment on Hackerank, followed by a screening interview. It all went well and got invited to the technical day. To prepare for the technical interview, I went through all materials and questions shared by others on this website and once I was half way, I noticed that the questions tend to be similar, except the pairwise coding. I recommend you go through questions here to be better prepared for the technical day. The interview was generally okay and the team was nice. Started off with Case Study (30 mins); followed by ML questions (30 mins); and finally coding (1 hour). There is barely time in-between to switch so expect to transition very quickly. For the case study, think out loud it helped me to figure the actual problem, as they only share the problem and you figure the rest out. The coding was fair, I had done a couple of Leetcode but they started off with Linear regression etc, kinda caught me off guard and wasted 35 mins on it. Though the program ran, the interviewer said there isn't enough time to complete second question, and we shared our coding experiences and clarity on a few questions. I am pretty confident in stats and ML knowledge but the issue could have been coding; so make sure you are up to speed with anything that can be thrown at you. Two days later I received a rejection email. No reason after having spend so much time is a bit disrespectful but we move on.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Case study: Waste reduction in chain stores. They simply stated that and I described it as a demand forecasting problem that can be solved with Linear Regression. Besides clarification questions, It was fine and they took it. MLQ 1. Difference between Supervised and Unsupervised Learning, and give examples 2. Difference between bagging and boosting; 3. Bias and variance, and explain in the context of Bagging/boosting 4. Performance metrics; what does AUC mean, interpret AUC of 50% 5. Gradient descent 6. Overfitting and Underfitting and how to overcome them in Decision Trees Coding: Implement linear regression, numpy, and plotting importance scores
