      Senior Product Manager Interview

      2 Jul 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Built In in Jun 2025

      Interview

Red flags right from the start. A Recruiter replied to my application within one day and invited me to provide my availability, the turnaround time on that was great. However, the Recruiter sent a duplicate email two minutes after in the same thread. I thought that was weird, but I chalked it up to a slip of the finger - it happens to us all. When I replied, only 20 minutes later, I received an out-of-office reply. Weird. Did you email me to ask for my availability and immediately clock out for a mini vacation? Anyway, this was on a Thursday, and I received an invitation for an interview that following Monday. My first call was with a Hiring Manager. This was unexpected since I was provided documentation about what to expect during the interview process which outlined that the first call would be with a Recruiter. I was happy to skip that and go straight to a Hiring Manager, but when I asked about it, I was told they "do things differently" on the Product team. Mind you, the documentation I received was specifically tailored around the Product Team's hiring process - not Sales or Marketing or some other team. I passed the Hiring Manager interview, and was moved onto a panel interview with three different members of the team back-to-back. On the day of that interview, I had my first two interviews, but wound up getting an email from the Recruiter that the third interviewer had to suddenly cancel for something that came up last minute, and that we would need to reschedule. It was apparent to me that this was an outright lie, since I could tell the first of three interviews didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped. I'm fully capable of owning up to my shortcomings, and I know that I kinda flubbed that round. There would be no rescheduled meeting, they were just too insincere to tell me straight up that I didn't pass the interview round and that they'd be moving on with other candidates. It's clear that their internal processes are a mess, and that they don't value honesty. I was happy to move quickly and skip some unnecessary steps, but their disorganization and lack of transparency leaves a very bad taste in my mouth about the company overall.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re sorry to hear that the process did not meet your expectations. We recognize that clear communication and transparency are important, and it’s clear we fell short in your case. We want every candidate to walk away with a good impression of Built In, whether or not it ends in a fit—and we fell short this time. This appears to have been a one-off miss, not reflective of how we typically run our process—but that doesn’t excuse what happened here. Your feedback is a reminder of how important it is to close the loop thoughtfully and directly. We appreciate your interest in Built In and wish you the best in your search.
