BroadBand Interactive interview questions

interviewed 2 weeks ago and got position. Then the guy does not contact me for 2 weeks before I'm supposed to begin and on day I'm supposed to start he tells me they won't pay for my background check cause it's too expensive but needed for the job. Either i could pay $480 for the check or not have a job. don't go working for these people.
