      I’ve never written a review about an interview experience before, but this one felt so off and out of the ordinary that I felt it was worth sharing. I had two interviews with Boldspace and both were confusing in different ways. I applied using LinkedIn Easy Apply and received an email the next morning to schedule an interview for that same week. The first one started off awkwardly, with the interviewer looking up at the camera from a strange angle, chewing gum and opening with, “I guess welcome to your interview… so what do we do?...” He then said he’d tell me a bit about the company and I could tell him a bit about myself and my work. That was the extent of the structure. I only found out that it was a mid-weight role during the interview. It is clear from my CV and LinkedIn that I’m a senior designer. That mismatch could have been cleared up much earlier. The second interview, after a bit of a setback on their end, was with the co-CEO. After asking me to tell him a bit about myself, he asked two questions. The first was, “How do you decide how to design a logo from scratch?” I explained that it depends on positioning, audience, competition, and what the brand is trying to communicate. He repeated the same question a few times. I wasn’t sure what he was actually trying to ask, so I offered to walk him through a real project to give some context. Still, he kept circling around the question and that was the only point during the interview where I got to (wasn’t asked to) present my work briefly. He appeared distracted, rushed, and disinterested. It also felt as though I was being interviewed by someone who hadn’t reviewed my portfolio or credentials beforehand. The second question “What do you think we can do better as an agency?” came without any meaningful lead-in. That could be an interesting question if there had been any real conversation or mutual interest built beforehand. It felt like a throwaway rather than a genuine invitation to engage. Overall, the process felt rushed and a bit careless. Candidates are expected to come prepared, and rightly so, but the same level of preparation and respect should be expected from the interviewer too.

      Asked candidates to complete a design task much more time consuming than reasonable, especially given this was required even before the offer of an interview. Design task was actually three separate projects, including redesigning what seems to be one of their current client's logo and Instagram feed, so they got a lot of nice free work from the 10 designers they asked to complete this. After completing the many days of free work, no interview, and no feedback. Boldspace, I recommend doing some research on standard design interview practices, because this process makes your company look like you really don't know the value of a designer or their time.

      Firstly we’re really sorry you feel this way and fully understand that a) this was not a normal interview process in this instance and b) the value of designers’ time, which we indeed cherish – our business depends on it. We would like to firstly make it clear that everyone received a response including feedback where constructive i.e. when simply not based on preference, despite good work. We had clearly pointed out in the email we sent (copied below) that we were inundated with applicants but wanted to make a permanent hire very fast (within a week - 10 days) which we did, and therefore asked if all designers were willing to undergo this process on these terms. The process was carried out as stated. None of the work provided and used in a task or interview process will ever be used and is not ‘free work.’ The brief was used to judge real work – for no other benefit than our team’s fast judgement and feedback in this instance. Again, we do apologise if you felt your hard work was not given the time and credit it deserved of a follow up interview. We hope that our terms were clear at the start regardless and we are very happy to talk more about the work itself if helpful. Please do email us directly. We wish you all the very best in your job search. Email sent (as referenced above): ‘Thank you so much for your application for graphic designer at Boldspace. We received over 150 applications in two days so have paused the process, several of which we really like, so would like to ask the 10 designers who we are most interested in out of the current applicants to do a task. We want to move fast with this process and so have set a deadline to receive presentations back by first thing Wednesday morning. In an ideal world we would then interview 2 or 3 of the top applicants (ideally in person) on Friday early afternoon in London, as myself and my business partner will be in town. Of course if the interview is not possible due to location or an immovable prior engagement, it will not be a deal breaker. I attach the task document (in both Powerpoint and PDF format). Please do let me know if you are willing and able to get something back to us by Wednesday morning, and many thanks in advance.’
