      Software Engineering Manager Interview

      23 Nov 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at BetterUp (Denver, CO) in Dec 2020

      Interview

I heard about the job through a mutual friend that put my in touch with someone that worked at BetterUp. After learning a bit about the company from her I expressed interest in learning more and had a phone screen with the Director of Engineering. I had a call with a member of the recruiting team after that, helping understand what the "on-site" would be like and was great at helping me feel prepared. The "on-site" (which was really all remote) was 5 interviews over several hours with: Product Manager, Technology Leadership Peer, CTO, Engineering Director, and a Culture interview. After that I had an interview with one of the founders, and then an interview with the other founder a bit later. It's a LOT of interviews, but it really helped me feel confident about my decision, and everyone I spoke to was welcoming.

      Question 1

I was told to have some "creative questions" prepared to ask of my interviewers.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at BetterUp (Seattle, WA) in Nov 2021

      Interview

First a basic screener followed by a one on one interview with another Engineering Manager (with a shadow). The Interviewer was nice enough but requested that I, off the cuff, independently come up with the 4 pillars of trust, as he had read in a book somewhere. This question is absurd. Even if you google "4 pillars of trust" you come up with at least 6 different answers, none of which match what the interviewer was looking for. This is a bad question to judge someones ability to be an effective Engineering Manager. This was not a conversation talking about trust, it was testing if i had the same definition as the interviewer. This is made worse by the interviewer constantly saying things like "I didn't make this up" and reading from a dictionary when I did finally come up with one of their pillars. I feel like I dodged a bullet with this position.
