      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Best Buy (D'Iberville, MS) in Sept 2010

      Interview

I transferred from another store, but I can tell you I went through three interviews. First, you must get a decent score on the online personality test, or your application won't even show in their system. The first was a get-to-know you where they look for enthusiastic individuals who are dressed appropriately. Showing up in jeans and giving closed ended answers to questions does not land you the job. They will ask you about your job experience and if you can work the holiday season (which must be a yes or you won't get hired). They will also ask you to pick three departments you can see yourself in. The second interview is usually with the department manager you are interested in working for. They will ask you questions where you are ranked from low to high on and they must write down your answers. Those questions consists of your previous experiences with teams, your worst customer, your best experience at a job, qualities you liked in a previous manager, career goals, what would you do if questions, and how your energy is. If you make it to the third interview it is with the store's general manager. That person is there to either offer you the job or tell you that it wouldn't be a good fit. They will also ask you what are your thoughts on theft and what you would do if you caught someone stealing even a pack of breath mints. Pay will be discussed and don't be scared to ask for more and to be able to back that request up with proven experience. Believe me, they will give you a hard time and may increase their offer, but then they may not. The first Best Buy store I worked for I actually got up and went to thank the person for their time because the pay offered was not fair based on my experience and customer satisfaction history. She then worked with me and offered me more. When I transferred stores two years later, the local gm could care less if I got up and walked away from asking for more. I was basically told I would come in at the rate I was hired at two years previously, and he said I could take the job or leave it because he could hire someone else. His attitude stunk and still does at our store... Overall though, just be genuine in your interviews, ask questions, and show excitement.

Be prepared to answer the why should we hire you question and be able to think about previous experiences bad and good.

Easy questions like "what would you do if a coworker was stealing from the company?". Managers were very nice and easy to talk to. Overall good experience and simple for a college student to apply.

I would say that knowing how mobile phones tie into daily life will help you frame your mind for the interview. Also good to know the different ways phone plans work.
