So I received a call from the store manager and we set up a time for an interview at the local store. It’s a two step processes at this store: first you interview with the Operations Manger then with the Store Manager. They cover the basics like availability, reviewing your resume and then they give you some details about the position they have and make sure it’s something you’re interested in (particularly if the number of hours available is adequate) Then they ask you a series of pre-determined situational questions from a laminated sheet they have. It gets a little repetitive answering them twice (because you’re interviewed separately and each interviewer asks them) but I understand why they do it that way so I didn’t get too bothered by it. Unfortunately I did get tripped up on one of the questions; I just wasn’t prepared for a question like that and had a hard time thinking of an example. I even froze up for about 10 seconds but the manager was polite and very kind about it and I eventually got through my answer. Both interviewers were friendly and easy to converse with (of course by this point I’d come to realize that most interviewers are always positive and agreeable regardless of your answers probably to avoid influencing what you’ll say)
The only part I didn’t care for was the “bait and switch”. I thought I was interviewing for one position but then they told me they had a different one they were considering me for. By this time I’d interviewed with a few retail businesses so I had experienced this previously but I still hate it when they do this! The problem was I already knew I didn’t want a retail job at this point but I needed work and thought that “retail cashier” could be helpful on my resume as I continued looking for a bank positions. Instead they told me about this “processing/receiving” position (basically a backroom stocker) which would be of very little use on a resume for a bank job, maybe even hurt me but I’m not sure about that. I got the feeling, during the interview, the Store Manager wanted to offer me the job on the spot but because I had no professional references listed said he had to contact HR to see if/how to proceed next and asked if I was going to be available to contact later that afternoon or evening.
In retrospect I think they pretty much figured out I wasn’t the type that would be there for long given my education. That might have even been why they switched job positions on me during the interview (hoping I’d say no to stockroom work and end the interview) and when all else failed, threw out a BS line about having to contact HR before offering a position. Regardless, I never heard back from them.
