      Software Engineer III Interview

      14 Aug 2023
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Aya Healthcare in Jul 2023

      Interview

Contact: An internal recruiter for Aya Healthcare reached out to me on LinkedIn to ask if I was interested in speaking more about a Software Engineer III (full stack, .net core, angular) position they had at Aya. I said yes, and we scheduled a phone call/screen. Round 1: Phone call/Screen The recruiter called me at the pre-arranged date and time. He did an amazing job at telling me about Aya, some high level information about some of the specific teams and products I might be working on, as well as a great overview of the benefits package, Work-Life-Balance priorities, and unlimited PTO. When I asked more about this "Unimited PTO" (as I have heard and experienced this benefit NOT working out well), I was happy to hear that in general most employees in the software side of Aya take between 25-35 days of PTO a year. That is well above many other companies amount of PTO - which was great to hear. At the end of the call, the recruiter said he would show my Resume to some managers and leads, and if they are interested, he will set up Round 2: 1-on-1 With Software Engineer Manager. This was a a Teams video call with a Software Engineer Manager for an interview that will consist of some high level technical questions as well as some personality, culture fit, and work experience questions about my resume. This lasted about 30 minutes, and was exactly as described to me by the recruiter. The manager was friendly, asked good questions, many basic tech questions and lots of "Tell me about a time when..." but in a more technical way. There were some specific Angular and C# questions, but nothing that I considered to be very difficult or intense relative to the position I was interviewing for. Round 3: 2x 45 minute Panel Interviews. First with technical leaders, the second with Software Engineer Managers who's teams you are being considered for. The first, more technical interview consisted of ZERO whiteboarding or live-coding, but did consist of some very difficult and technical questions regarding their teams tech stack, which is Angular, .Net, MS SQL Server. I actually preferred this over doing live-coding, but I did have to say "I'm really not sure", for a few of the questions. The interviewers were great however, and didn't let that stop the flow of things and we would move on, or they would further prompt to see if I could "dig out an answer" - they really seemed to be on my side and wanting me to do well in the interview. The second, more personality fit and systems design interview was very similar to the one previous with the two technical leads, but this one focused more on patterns of behavior, information about what makes a good code review, my personal standards when it comes to code smell, etc. A few technical questions were repeated from the technical interview immediately prior. These Engineering managers were very friendly, casual, and made it very easy for the interview to feel like a conversation. 24 hours after the panel interviews I received a call from the recruiter with an offer.
