      Senior Principal Engineer Interview

      22 May 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Amsterdam
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Atlassian (Amsterdam) in Apr 2023

      Interview

The first interview was with the Corporate Recruiter. This lasted for one hour. This went well, and I honestly felt like this was going to be a nice and successful process because my experience was immediately recognized. The second interview was with the Director of Engineering and Senior Engineering Manager. This also lasted for one hour. Both calls were over Zoom. The Director of Engineering has very little warmth or emotional connection with candidates, even after reading the welcome script; how "amazing" everything is at Atlassian. My spider senses were firing right off the bat, and it seemed to go downhill when I asked whether I was being too technical, and his answer was, "You can never be technical enough". I had woken the ego, and it proved hard from then to reconnect. I would advise playing more of an introvert than an extrovert in the interview. I suspect much of the team operates this way - a manager of highly technical minions. Preparation is everything here, so have the scripted replies to any team-related questions ready, like his scripted introduction. Keep it clear and concise, as his disposition is to look for problems instead of potential in candidates. Maybe they treat you better once you get hired, but if this were anything to go by, then I would reconsider.

      Interview

P70 candidate: 5 stages: System Design Coding Architect Craft Leadership Values Got message from recruiter on linkedin. Normal recruiting call, followed by a 2nd recruiter who went over what was expected on system design. Studied on system design for a week, everything from chats/fileshare/streaming platforms/search engines/web crawlers

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Got to the System design, a web crawler, which I had studied for. It was a custom web crawler, you can submit a list of URLs (100 urls max) and it wound find all images in any pages associated with the urls. But, this was more of a code design. Didn't care about throughput, storage capacity, endpoint security, load balancing, or flow of data through the system. They gave 3 endpoints and wanted you to design the crawler itself, how would it crawl the pages, and find the images. More like psuedo coding, but with graphical boxes. Not what I was expecting or prepared for.

      Senior Principal Engineer Interview

      21 Oct 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Melbourne
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Atlassian (Melbourne) in Jun 2023

      Interview

Multiple technical and leadership interviews. Including the phone screening, I had 8 interviews in total! Three of them were technical and focused on architecture and system design. All interviewers were quite smart and very professional. Positive experience overall. They ended up not offering me the position not because of my interviews as all comments were super positive, but because of my previous experience as they needed someone who had a similar experience. Something I pointed out from the start and they were fine to start the interview process!
