I applied online, and within a few weeks I got an email from a recruiter I was chosen to interview. She asked me for a 4-hour time slot to complete a "coding exercise/ interview". I responded saying I could complete the coding test on a weeknight, and interview over the phone during lunch hours any day. She responded with one line, saying that the coding test and interview where combined and that I needed to schedule them together.
I was really confused as to how someone would stay on the line with me for 4 hours as I coded, so I responded back with an apology and asking for clarification. On this, the third clarification email, the recruiter informed me I was being flown out for this test/ interview and to please pick a 4 hour time slot. (This was an important detail to mention in the initial email, I thought.)
I wasn't screened on the phone with anyone, we hadn't discussed salary expectations, and I was uneasy that my first interaction for the role be in in-person coding test. I gave a few days I could be available and waited.
A week later, I received an automated email (not from my recruiter) saying I was not selected for the role.
