      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      3 Feb 2019
      Anonymous employee
      Chicago, IL
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ActiveCampaign (Chicago, IL) in Dec 2018

      Interview

A friend kept asking me to apply for a role at ActiveCampaign. He told me about a dev night, and I attended. I met the CTO and a technical recruiter. I watched a video about ActiveCampaign. The CTO was really nice, gave everyone his cell number, then invited everyone for lunch. Also, I spent some time with the technical recruiter who was also nice and professional. I sent my resume to him, and we spoke for some time after our initial meeting. I was sent a programming assignment based on their api. I did and sent it back after a day. A couple of days later I was invited again on site for an interview. I met with two panels and the hiring manager. The next day they made a great offer. Background check, references, and constant contact throughout the process made it easy.

      Sr. Software Engineer Interview

      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ActiveCampaign (Chicago, IL) in Jul 2023

      Interview

Met with the recruiter for a 15-20 min conversation where they mostly read through a script. Great conversation with the Director and then a coding challenge. The coding challenge is explained to be straight forward and I was told that I would meet with an engineer after the exercise. I solved the problem but then a week later got the generic one sentenced email that they were not moving forward. I reached out for feedback and never heard back. I personally think it's poor form for a company to have a candidate invest so much time in a challenge and then provide no feedback.

      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at ActiveCampaign in Apr 2023

      Interview

The process was divided into 5 different interviews. The first one was a phone screen, the second interview was with an engineering manager in ActiveCampaign. The third and fourth were all performed in the same day, split into one hour interviews each. The first part of this interview was solving a coding assessment supervised by two software engineers, while the second part was a 1hr conversation with two other software engineers. Some topics discussed in this conversation were monolith & microservice architectures, previous work experience, personal projects, relevant experience in different technologies (kubernetes, golang, php, ember, typescript/javascript), pros and cons of adopting certain technologies (i.e. gRPC, microservices over monoliths or the inverse, GraphQL, etc.)

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What are the main differences between monolith and microservice architectures? What are some drawbacks of microservices? When would you prefer using NoSQL databases over SQL databases? Could you dive deeper on why you chose certain technologies [in your previous projects]?
