I had a wonderful phone screening with a recruiter in HR and then a not-great call with a department head a few days later. The person I spoke to was clearly not feeling well, which I sympathize with, but the second question was "Given that your major in college was X, do you really think you want to do Y long-term?" My resume and most recent experience (and the fact that I'm even applying for the job and you selected me for an interview) clearly demonstrates that I want to do Y long-term. I felt that you'd only ask that question of a young person like myself if you're trying to weed out flaky or not-serious candidates, but it's off-putting to make that the second question and to phrase it in that way. The rest of the conversation was cordial but I could tell I had been written off. A disappointing experience overall and now I wonder how other recruiters are viewing me.
