Pros
Proximity to home, no long commute.
Cons
Low pay compared to responsibilities and experience, lower than industry standards fir PTO accrual, inflexible schedule, silo mentality, the list goes on.
My overall review: I don't usually do this because I feel negativity isn't constructive, but in this case, I feel compelled to warn potential applicants before buying into the hype. They sell you on the idea that UM-FLINT is like a family, that they foster a collaborative, tight-knit working environment, when my experience was the exact opposite. I was hired to handle the business operations aspect of the dean of students office, a position that I was in the process of (yes, you read that right- still in the process of) learning, when I was called into the office by my boss and informed that I hadn't met her performance expectations. Fired, after a week of essentially teaching myself the role using online training modules that were 99% written instructions. I had extensive experience doing a similar role, but after two solid weeks of reading instructions, I was admittedly exhausted, mentally.
Not using that as an excuse, but give a new hire some grace if that truly what you preach. In addition to this, a few false statements were made about my alleged absence from an off-campus event, wherein I enthusiastically participated, but it was claimed that I wasn't there.
To add insult to injury, I even attended my boss's office party at her home where I introduced my spouse, where she behaved as if nothing was wrong, then turn around and terminate me the following Monday, so clearly her niceness was only an act.
I'm left saddened and bewildered by my employment experience with this institution. The irony is, I had actually been warned that you basically pay them for the honor of working for them, a fact I can attest to given the extremely low pay for a role with such important responsibilities as mine. In my opinion, I wouldn't recommend accepting a position there.
