      Cons

Where do I even begin for cons? When I interviewed I was promised a lot of things, FLEX time, job security, possibility of working from home if needed, casual dress code, 18 vacation days, and a great company that values families and puts them first. As soon as I started a work from home option was completely off the table, and never truly something the hiring team should have promised me. I went through 3 cycle release changes in 1 year and was expected to pick up on the new changes instantly, and was told by upper management it was a “sink or swim” type of company. Soon after that all of the new policy changes started to happen. We went from smart casual dress code to business casual with a week’s notice. Clear bag policy (which was revoked after all the complaints), no more FLEX time, gym hours being reduced to only being open during lunch, and many other minor things which just kept adding up. On top of all of this they started a new metrics policy for QA where we were told “the more work you put out the faster you get a raise”, this was not true at all. Many people doing the work of multiple people themselves were getting less points of those only getting one or two issues out a release. When asked about it to upper management all they had to say was they “couldn’t explain it”. Paycom also prides itself on never having any layoffs, but that’s not true at all. They just fire you for minuscule reasons when they are hurting for money every other quarter after getting the numbers back and seeing that sticking to the old ways doesn’t keep the business afloat and they need a quick cash out to buy themselves out of any hole. The people also being fired conveniently had previously put in FMLA, were about to get a raise, had questioned a new policy change, or simply had to call into work last minute due to school closures for severe weather. Yet, they can keep an employee accused and proven guilty of sexual harassment. They are losing people left and right either for firing people for “performance”, “no longer being a good fit for the company”, or people quitting from being so burnt out from being overworked and underpaid they feel the need to leave even without another job lined up. The morale is so bad here that I personally knew complete teams where everyone was seeking jobs elsewhere in hopes of leaving this company. When the morale being low was brought up to upper management all they had to say was “it’s always going to be like this here” and they’re right it’s always going to be like this at Paycom until they get a new leadership who actually knows what they are doing and cares about their employees and not their million dollar house and multiple ski trips

At Paycom, we strive to maintain a culture of transparency and open communication as we understand the hiring process is integral to ensuring expectations regarding roles and benefits are aligned. Our company is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our business and our clients, and we expect our team members to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities. We would like to clarify that Paycom has not experienced layoffs, and in fact, we are actively hiring in several departments and continue to invest in the growth and development of our team members. In addition, Paycom follows applicable laws, guidelines and policies regarding employee-related decisions. We prohibit harassment of any kind and maintain multiple channels for employees to report potential violations of these laws and policies. We hope you were solution oriented and discussed your concerns with your leaders before parting ways. Legacy code, it’s a punishment working at paycom. Very bad work culture. Posting positive review on social media about paycom is one of the task in my training. There is no agile practices. Work torture from 8 am to 5 pm. Less pay more work.

      Pros

Across the entire organization, it is evident that Paycom attracts high achievers and driven individuals who are eager to succeed. Within the marketing department, I’ve worked with some of the most talented marketing, creative & comms professionals I’ve ever encountered. Since joining, I have been challenged and have had the opportunity to learn more than I have at other organizations, both within the marketing department and across different departments within the company. While the expectations have been high, I have always received the resources, coaching and support to meet them. In addition to my team, a major pro is the perks. The campus is beautiful, and the compensation packages & benefits are some of the most competitive I have encountered. There are numerous culture-building activities, employee resources, and opportunities to meet other Paycom employees outside of your department that really make it feel like you are a part of it all.

      Cons

Paycom can be a fast-paced environment, and high expectations are placed on every employee across the organization. However, in my experience, people are given the resources, coaching, and support to meet those expectations if they put in the work. Additionally, some individuals may not appreciate the dress code (business casual, leaning more professional for client & prospect-facing roles) or the limited flexibility in work locations.

      The Cult Continues to Degrade

      Pros

If no one else will hire you because they require previous experience, you can work at Paycom to gain that experience and an appreciation of how a company should not be run. After 4 years, you will have 5 weeks of vacation, 2 weeks of sick time, and other paid time off such as bereavement, but you will be punished for taking this time. Any PTO is recorded as non-capitalized time, and is therefore not worth any development points which will bring down your monthly amount which prevents you from meeting your expected job requirements and might lead to you getting placed on a performance improvement plan and eventually fired.

      Cons

Chad Richison, the CEO of Paycom at the time of writing this review (hopefully not by the time you read this) is a tyrannical dictator that fires people on a whim and makes decisions based on emotions rather than logical consideration. The most glaring offense is his surprise announcement in December 2022 that everyone must return to the office and stop working remotely. Most departments only had a few weeks to comply, but some technical roles such as software development were given half a year. When we arrived at the office, we found disorganization and chaos. That was a year ago, and even now no one gets any work done in the cube farm due to the distractions and general disappointment in Paycom. Productivity plummeted after forcing people back into the office, but Paycom leadership is incapable of admitting that they have ever made any mistakes, so they continue to blame and fire QA testers and product managers. There has been a recent announcement that leadership will be "cracking down on badge scans," although no one is quite sure what this will mean other than leadership wants people sitting at their desk in the office building because leadership is incapable of realizing that employees sitting at their desk are not necessarily working. There is currently a class action lawsuit against Paycom for cannibalization of earnings. The primary codebase is a monolithic pile of technical debt that causes any new developments to be riddled with bugs and unexpected behavior. The most rewarded programming style is to throw out as much code as possible and patch bugs later. This style is particularly encouraged at "code-a-thon," an annual voluntary weekend of working for trinkets and breadcrumbs. In the last several months, every software development team got shuffled around so no one is familiar with the parts of code they are now responsible for. We also have no time to figure it out as whoever got what we were once familiar with is constantly asking us how that piece works. The turnover rate is extremely high, and 99% of new hires are fresh college graduates. If you have worked a software development job before, please spare yourself this misery.
