How are the career development opportunities at Northwestern University?

Great benefits including great health insurance, employee support, holiday and PTO, lots of support systems, career development opportunities and ways to learn and grow as a researcher. Facilities and resources are great. Most staff and students and many faculty are lovely colleagues.

I’ve seen several instances of “higher ups” treating good employees badly for no apparent reason, different policies applied to different people, huge pushback for relatively simple requests and so many issues with hr, admin, salary payment etc. northwestern seems to have a huge chip on its shoulder about not being an ivy and appears to be happy to do whatever it takes to shine brighter even if that means discarding the very people who make it a great place!

The faculty, staff, and students I work with personally are smart, kind, and hard-working. The working environment is friendly and flexible. The university offers a lot of opportunities for professional development and good benefits.

Postdocs continue to be underpaid for the value they bring the institution. Also, there is so much red tape and bureaucracy around grant management that it hinders productivity. I have never encountered such a disorganized IRB in my life.

While the company offers a stable work environment and supportive team culture, there is little to no room for career advancement. Opportunities for professional development or internal mobility are minimal, which can be discouraging for those looking to grow within the organization.

The team is competent and socially fun, although there are a lot of unspoken cultural norms that can be hard to pick up on. Lots of PTO available.

Organization is cutting benefits and there are few career growth opportunities, even in times that are not as challenging as the current time. I think people of color have a harder time advancing in their careers.

The community is strong. I find that while it's still the slow academic world, people still look to work together. There's a lot of early conversations about career advancement and wanting people to take advantage of University benefits.

Lots of opportunities for advancement in MSS department due to high turnover.

-Toxic work environment for staff, where everyone is expected to accept abuse from faculty and work extra hours during the week as well as weekends. -Also, the department struggles with racism. There have been workshops to try and help but I’ve talked to co-workers that are POC about their experiences and they are clearly being treated very differently than most other employees. -Pay for RA’s is lower than the average across the University, let alone the industry.
