What is the hiring process like at J.P. Morgan?
Pros
Great operating committee, great research, and great product offering for clients. Good benefits and time off. Initially 3 weeks vacay time for Analyst and below, and 4 weeks for Associates and above.
Cons
Poor talent management. Thousands of people working their tail off in the call center and retail branches who are making less money than people in the accounting department who barely work. Lateral movements between LOBs is also extremely difficult. Many managers would rather hire someone external who has experience in the job they are hiring for, rather than hire someone internal with no experience in the specific job. While this makes sense in some cases, it ultimately discourages employees from staying with JPM, as they go external to get the experience/lateral career move they desire and perhaps return back to JPM a few years down the road or never return. For JPM, this employee behavior is costly and inefficient, yet provoked by narrow minded hiring practices. When looking for career advice and help for making a lateral career move, I only received an email response back from half the people I reached out to :/
Advice to Management
Make a bigger point to find internal talent. The next Einstein already works for JPM, the firm needs to recognize a wealth of talent (10,000+ retail employees) is making less than new hires out of college who know nothing about banking, work ethic, and J.P. Morgan. Who would you rather hire: someone with an eight week internship or 5 years of full-time experience at a Chase retail branch? Improve company culture to help employees make lateral career moves into the LOB they find most interesting. The various LOBs at JPM is what makes the company unique, yet employees inevitably realize jumping from CCB to AWM to CIB to CB to Corp is extremely difficult given the narrow mindedness of many hiring managers.......Yet a client who grows overtime to eventually do business with all client facing LOBs is the dream.
