What is a typical working day like at Giant Eagle?

      Understaffed and Overworked

      Business outlook

      Pros

My coworkers are fantastic and friendly, my manager is really nice, and I appreciate the benefits like vacation time I've accumulated.

      Cons

There are never enough cashiers and the front end is constantly kept understaffed, cashiers' requests for more/less hours are ignored, cashiers and coordinators are regularly expected to leave the front end to go fetch more carts from outside which leaves front end even MORE understaffed, and the shift times/lengths are so inconsistent that cashiers, coordinators, and managers are very often highly stressed and sleep-deprived.

      Pain

      Business outlook

      Pros

The people are generally pretty nice. There is supposed flexibility in scheduling, but I haven't experienced this yet. Jeans and a t-shirt for a dress code isn't too bad. Having a locker is nice. 10% discount is nice, sort of.

      Cons

Low-wage, depressing, open-schedule retail work. Waiting until Friday night to see next week's schedule only to realize you have been put on for 34-36 weeks in various departments despite having been hired part-time, having your availability ignored so that you can work until 8 PM on a Saturday. Coming home with your body aching after 8 hours of breaking down pallets on your own, your fingers frozen from stocking the freezers all day, having no life but also no energy to deal with life outside of the meaningless, dead-end job but always having to smile and direct the public. A thankless, ultimately unrewarding job that gives expression to existential dread. Prices are too high/discount too low for you to shop at the store, too. Not for 11.75 an hour. Also, a 15-minute break (two for a full shift!) is nothing.

      i enjoyed my time there

      Pros

management was nice easy going pace schedule could be flexible

      Cons

the schedule wasn't great but I just wasn't built for the overnight shift. I worked there during the covid lockdowns so i am sure a lot of my complaints were mostly around that era
