As an associate at the service desk at Walmart many conflicts came my way. In general I find the best approach is to be humble and apathetic to the customer and their situation being nice and understanding goes a long way. It's important to maintain adherance to policy but it can be done nicely and professionally. Keeping a nice tone and pleasant face helps, and choosing words with care.
