I watched a Senior Manager get laid off after 15 years at the firm, and they were given ten minutes to pack their desk and leave. Loyalty in this profession is a one-way streetL. I’ve been staying at my job because I felt loyal to my partners, but seeing that happen has completely changed my perspective. Is anyone else pivoting to a mercenary mindset?
I have an interview for an Internal Audit role, and I’m trying to figure out how to lie and say I’m passionate about process improvement. The truth is I just want a job where I don't have to deal with clients or busy season. How do you fake enthusiasm for IA without sounding like a robot? I just got an offer for a Controller role at a mid-sized manufacturing company owned by a PE. I’m currently in Public making $135k with okay benefits and the usual busy season misery. The new offer is $165k base, a 20% target bonus, and equity. BUT the CFO basically told me the books are a mess and they’re looking to exit in 24 months. Should I avoid or take a chance?

When your brain starts looking at a broken leg as a vacation, you know you’ve reached the end of your rope in Tax. I’m looking for an Industry exit that is the polar opposite of high-growth. I want stable, boring, and predictable. What industries are the best for someone who just wants to do their 40 hours and be left entirely alone?
I'm 31 and been in public accounting for 9 years, but the burnout is really getting to me. I am seriously thinking of quitting with no backup plan and selling my place... I'm single with no kids and just want to be a free bird and travel. I don't want to be in the same place another decade from now with regrets and dreading my life. I have no desire to do anything accounting related anymore so IDK where to start or pivot. Should I take a gap year? Or find remote work in an unrelated field?
would you leave your firm if they made it clear that supporting you isn’t a priority? i’m a heavy senior managing a lot of engagements (many that are new to me due to turnover) but i struggle to get any decent staffing and leadership has basically told me to kick rocks and figure it out on my own. i’ve talked to HR and they’ve agreed i’m drastically overextended and not properly staffed, but there’s nothing they can do. they also aren’t offering financial incentive for the amount of stretching
Loyalty is what they expect from employees to a firm. It's not reciprocal
Yes - Deloitte also let go of a number of long tenured Senior Managers and it’s changed my mindset for sure. I also felt a sense of loyalty to my partners but it’s becoming more a transactional relationship now.
Loyalty in public accounting is far longer than gone… do whatever is good for you
