One reason many recruiters say not to use that feature is because someone from a current recruiting firm might find you're open to work. However, since you've been laid off, you don't have to worry your employer would feel threatened by you looking for new work.
Thank you!
You're laid off, looking for work, so yes, you're open to work. Change that and get to looking!
If you are not working, you should use Open to Work and every opportunity you can to make yourself available and visible to employers that are hiring.
At this time, and under your circumstances, there is no reason NOT to admit that you are "open to work." If you were still employed, it probably wouldn't be wise to post that you would like to leave your current position. It could be a case of "be careful what you ask for." That's not the case, so good luck in your job search.
I believe you can select specific companies not to see that status if you have LinkedIn Premium. Since you were let go, I wouldn't worry about it though.
