What is a Stocker?

Stockers (or stock clerks) are responsible for ensuring that shelves, bins, displays, storage, and aisles are properly stocked to make sure customers can find and purchase merchandise they are looking for. Stockers often work in a retail or warehouse environments receiving, unloading, and unpacking cartons, crates, and boxes of bulk or packaged goods, and checking labels and information before moving it to where it needs to be.

Often a high school degree is required to become a stocker. The daily duties are physically demanding, requiring lifting heavy loads and moving around the workfloor most of the shift. The work hours of a stocker can often be outside of regular work hours, sometimes at night and during the weekends.

Responsibilities for Stocker

  • Perform general stocking duties on a daily basis including storing and stocking products in/on bins, pallets, shelves, racks, and refrigerators
  • Move, handle, and transport finished products, material, or supplies to other departments by utilizing hand jacks, lift carts, and other means of transportation
  • Load, unload, and move heavy, bulky products
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards (including backroom and shelves), and dispose of trash
  • Help and assist customers in finding merchandise and providing them with information
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Follow safety policies and procedures, and encourage colleagues to do the same

Qualifications for Stocker

  • High school diploma or GED strongly preferred
  • 1-2 years of experience in area of responsibility
  • Must be able to do simple mathematical calculations, including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and computing percentages and ratios
  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push/pull heavy loads of 75 pounds in a physical environment
  • Must be able to work 100% of the time moving about in the work area
  • Ability to perform work tasks while bending, stooping, climbing, and reaching
  • Previous experience in receiving, handling, and stocking in retail or warehouse/distribution environments preferred
