What is a Sales Clerk?

As a sales clerk, you deal with customers on a daily basis. You work face-to-face assisting customers with finding the right products. In a sales clerk position, it is your job to help a customer from start to finish, until a product is purchased. Sales clerks need to be friendly and knowledgeable about a company's product. You'll spend a lot of time greeting customers and answering questions. You will also process sales transactions.

You work for a diverse range of people and industries. Your main function is to assist customers who are looking for certain products or who have questions. You should always have a positive attitude and be willing to help. A central part of your job is to understand the product inventory in order to make sales and answer questions. You must have excellent communication skills. Most companies prefer a high school diploma and/or experience in sales.

Responsibilities for Sales Clerk

Qualifications for Sales Clerk

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with a valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Must be able to travel to other retail locations within a 50-mile radius and capability to maintain a clean driving record
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows or the ability to learn new software quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to stoop, bend, and kneel frequently, and the ability to be on your feet for eight hours during one work shift
  • Have a strong work ethic and are eager to learn and make new sales with customers, including up-selling and add-on selling
  • Be strongly skilled in organization, problem-solving, customer service, and multitasking while being committed to excellence
  • Have product knowledge before your start date and willing to begin as a part-time sales clerk
  • Must wear professional attire while on the sales floor and commit to the high standards the company has put forth
  • Have a background that shows dependability, a love of closing deals, and that customer satisfaction is of the utmost importance to you
