What is a Caterer?

A Caterer typically works for a restaurant or a bakery. Their primary role is to supply food for weddings, parties, corporate events, and other large gatherings. Caterers oversee all aspects of the catering process including menu options, ingredients, staff selection, and training. A typical Caterer will work in an industrial kitchen environment where they prepare the requested menu options for specific events.

There and no specific education requirements to work as a Caterer. A High School Diploma is required by most employers with some culinary experience preferred. A previous history of working in a high-production kitchen is preferred for large volume businesses, but smaller operations will often train on the job. Caterers are often tasked with an extensive menu of special requests. Possessing an ability to follow detailed instructions exactingly is a preferred quality in all Caterers

Responsibilities for Caterer

  • Attend morning meetings
  • Coordinate with kitchen manager for the day's orders

Qualifications for Caterer

  • Ability to follow detailed directions without error
  • Familiarity with industrial kitchen equipment
  • Comfortable overseeing a team of subordinates
  • A drive to work safely and efficiently
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays
