What is a Bar Manager?

Bar Managers work hand in hand with the Staff, Vendors and Bar Owner to ensure a smooth running, profitable business. Bar Managers are directly responsible for sourcing staff, training staff, terminating staff, ordering and turning inventory, controlling labor, controlling waste, nightly accounting, marketing, visual and the general upkeep of the establishment.

While a degree in restaurant management is preferred, often times Bar Managers obtain their jobs through employment history and duration of industry experience. Having certifications or a degree from a recognized school will improve any candidates chances of landing a higher paying job. Seeing that there are a multitude of moving parts to oversee, a Bar Manager must have very strong prioritizing, management and communication skills.

Responsibilities for Bar Manager

  • Attend frequent meetings with bar owners
  • Source and train staff to best fit the bar's needs
  • Schedule staff in an efficient manner to best cover the demands of the customers
  • Communicate with vendors to assure the appropriate amount of products are on hand for the forecasted demand
  • Resolve all staff conflicts swiftly and properly
  • Assure all transactions and banking are conducted with no variance
  • Work shifts required to meet the needs of the bar. This may include nights, weekends and holidays
  • Spend busy nights glad-handing customers to ensure their dining experience is the best

Qualifications for Bar Manager

  • 10+ years in the Hospitality industry
  • A history of running a profitable business
  • Knowledge or modern POS systems
  • A familiarity with Quickbooks or other accounting based software
  • Current Mixologist education
  • ability to occasionally lift 50 lbs
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Submission to a background check
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and holidays
