As challenges mount for researchers in Ukraine, a professor in Kyiv talks about her experience — and how we can help Ukrainian researchers. On February 24, 2022, Nana’s life changed dramatically, along with the lives of so many people in her country, as Russian forces invaded the country. Nana recalled: "A day later, we were forced to leave Kyiv, since a part of the region was occupied. Most of our laboratory fellows moved to the Carpathian mountains in the west of Ukraine with us." Part of the reason for the move was misinformation spread by Moscow propagandists that there were secret genetic weapons in labs in Ukraine, funded by the United States. Nana and her colleagues feared that this could make them a target because their laboratory uses various genetic approaches — as is the case with most research in biomedicine today — and they have a grant from the US National Institutes of Health devoted to studies of neuro-immune interaction. “It felt like returning home”: Why I’ve come back to work at Elsevier. Three years ago, Jess Pritchard left Elsevier for a role at a large telecommunications company. It was an excellent opportunity for her to develop her skill set, but she missed the sense of purpose of working at Elsevier. As she explained: "I quickly discovered that I am mission-driven, and helping large corporations acquire telecommunications resources wasn’t inspiring for me." Jess, based in Philadelphia, rejoined Elsevier in 2020 as a Commercial Manager on the Clinical Solutions Commercial team. “It really felt like returning home,” she recalled...

Racial inequities are a long-standing issue in health care. One way to make progress on that front can start right in classrooms. Earlier this month, the scientific publisher Elsevier announced the latest edition of its 3D anatomy teaching tool for medical students. And, for the first time, it tackles the centuries-long absence of non-White bodies in the teaching of anatomy. It’s a crucial innovation. It may seem obvious that diseases that manifest themselves on the skin can look quite different depending on a person’s skin tone. Yet a 2018 study found that fewer than 5% of images in general medical textbooks include dark skin tones. So it’s not surprising that doctors are better at identifying skin anomalies on lighter skin than on darker skin.
