      Not Worth Your Time

20 Jun 2021 - Communication Advisor - Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES)

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Adequate pay, but no ability for salary raises due to current university policies in response to the pandemic - Standard 9-5 working hours, overtime is rarely needed - One-to-one advising and small group workshops that are more manageable than the average-sized classroom

      Cons

      - Unprofessional behaviour/relationships amongst co-workers and management-level staff. Current anti-discrimination/equal employment efforts are not strong enough nor trustworthy enough to combat such behaviour that would be better dealt with in other workplaces - Lack of direction. Senior staff has difficulties defining the role of Communication Advisors and struggles to pinpoint what job duties are and are not a part of the CA role. More emphasis is being placed on YouTube/Instagram videos and other promotional endeavours instead of the traditional teaching and advising aspects of the position which are most relevant to HKU students - Lack of impact. Low booking rates by students indicate that these specific services offered by CAES are not meaningful to the majority of the HKU student population - Lack of upward mobility/career growth. In the past, people who have worked as CAs have moved up to higher teaching positions within CAES (Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, etc.), however within the past few years, there has been a much higher turnover rate with more former CAs seeking employment elsewhere instead of within CAES or HKU after just one or two years

      Pros

Flexible working hours, nice colleagues and boss (of course it totally depends on which lab you're in).

      Cons

Project based job nature, which means, when the deadline comes, you might have to work restlessly. Extremely low salary according to the standard in Hong Kong. Not recommended if you have a family to look after.
